A Seattle Rum-preneur

Go to Rumba on Seattle’s Capital Hill on any given night and you will walk into a beautiful azure blue and hardwood Caribbean dream. Belt driven ceiling fans spin above. There are old postcards covering the walls. It’s the perfect place for patrons to sip hand-crafted daiquiris from one of the largest collections of rum on the planet. Behind the bar, you will find Rumba’s visionary team: Rum expert and General Manager Kate Perry at the helm.

With a degree in anthropology, Kate has spent most of her life traveling to foreign countries and learning about people and culture. Along the way, she has sent postcards to family and friends. A lot of postcards. “While on the road, I have always tried to stay connected with people. I like postcards because they are old fashioned. Sending one in the mail is still a special thing for both sender and receiver.”

On a trip this March to explore Jamaica & the French Caribbean’s rum and history, Kate used pennypost to send postcards back to her friends. With her pictures from Instagram on the front and personalized messages on the back, they arrived successfully and surprised her friends before she returned home.

“The trip was amazing. We tried some really unique rums; some funky ones too! It was a whirlwind adventure and we traveled all over Jamaica, Martinique and Guadalupe. Using pennypost made it super easy to connect with folks back home, even though I was only gone for 10 days. In the past, I would buy postcards, then try to find stamps, and then, in a rush at the end of my trip, try to write to everyone. This trip, sending postcards with pennypost was more spontaneous and in the moment and I knew that they would arrive for sure. Having my own photos on the front made it unique and authentically personal.”

On Kate’s most recent trip, she visited Cognac France and surprised her friends with exciting news. In a beautiful cellar filled with romance and some very special rum, she married her partner Tommy. After the ceremony, postcards of her magical night were in the mail and on their way.
